From isolated risks to interacting systems

Traditional hiking advice often treats risks in isolation. Navigation, weather, fitness, and equipment are considered as separate problems.

In reality, these factors do not operate independently.

The framework focuses on how systems interact, how pressure builds across them, and how decisions influence the direction of that pressure over time. This allows you to move from reacting to problems to managing them before they escalate.

The eight systems

The framework identifies eight interdependent systems that shape outcomes on the trail. Each system can come under pressure independently, but they do not fail in isolation.

Navigation & Positioning
Route management, terrain reading, and positional awareness under changing conditions.

Environmental Protection
Managing exposure to heat, cold, wind, and weather across the duration of a trip.

Hydration & Fuel
Maintaining physical function through adequate hydration and energy management.

Load Carrying & Mobility
Pack weight, fit, and how load affects movement efficiency and fatigue rates.

Injury & Medical Response
Recognising and managing injury or illness in the field without external support.

Communication & Rescue
Trip communication, emergency signalling, and rescue trigger decisions.

Equipment Reliability
Understanding equipment failure modes and maintaining redundancy in critical systems.

Decision-Making & Judgement
How cognitive pressure, group dynamics, and fatigue affect decision quality.

How the systems interact

No system operates in a vacuum. A navigation error consumes time. Time pressure increases pace. Increased pace raises hydration demand and accelerates fatigue. Fatigue degrades decision-making quality.

Understanding these interactions — not just the individual systems — is what the framework develops.
